Court Martial Attorney – Psychologist testifies in soldier’s court martial
FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A psychologist says a Green Beret accused of killing an Afghan man and mutilating his body feared for his life when he shot and killed the man last year.
The Fayetteville Observer said forensic psychologist Claudia Coleman testified Tuesday at a North Carolina court-martial for Master Sgt. Joseph Newell that the shooting was consistent with a fear reaction to a threat. Newell has testified that the suspected Taliban insurgent lunged at him during questioning on March 5, 2008.
Newell faces a life prison sentence if convicted of murder.
The military judge said closing arguments would be held Wednesday.
The 39-year-old Newell of Tecumseh, Mich., also is charged with cutting off the man’s ear, which a prosecutor showed jurors as the trial opened last week.
