The Army has dropped charges against Arvin High School graduate Jess Cunningham stemming from a spring 2007 incident in Iraq.Staff Sgt. Jess Cunningham, 27, was facing a court-martial on charges of conspiracy to commit premeditated murder.Four Iraqi men were bound, blindfolded, shot in the head and dumped in a Baghdad canal, according to an Associated Press report from September. The killings were reportedly committed as retribution for casualties suffered by Cunningham’s unit.At least one fellow unit member, Spc. Belmor Ramos of Utah, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder and was sentenced to prison. Ramos, who was sentenced to seven months in prison after taking a plea deal, said during his court martial that he stood guard from a machine-gun turret while the Iraqi men were shot, according to the AP.Calls to the Army weren’t returned, but Cunningham’s father, Buster Cunningham, confirmed that the charges against his son had been dropped. Buster Cunningham said he always believed his son was innocent, and that he was “relieved” the charges were dropped.
